July
is National Anti-Boredom month, so if you’re home for the summer
feeling a little down and depressed or just searching for something
to do, let our guide offer you a few suggestions.
1. Get in Shape.
We all
know that exercise raises your level of endorphins, which increases your happiness,
so why not hit the gym, track or basketball court? You’ll
feel healthier and it’s certainly more fun than lying on the couch. If
typical sports just aren’t your thing, why don’t’ you:
- Walk your neighborhood’s sidewalks and meet
your neighbors.
- Hike the nearest trail.
- Go to the grocery store, but leave the car at home.
- Wash your car – by hand.
- Do yard work. Pulling weeds, spreading mulch
and carrying water to pots is a great stress reliever and workout rolled
into one.
2. Have fun - outside.
Slow down – curing boredom doesn’t necessary mean speeding
up things. Why not slow down and, for lack of a better colloquialism, “stop
and smell the roses.” As long as the sun is shining and the leaves
are green, spending time outside should be high on the anti-boredom activity
list. Whether you are eating dinner on a patio or hiking through one
of Ohio’s many parks and trails, it’s July already and winter
comes along to quickly in Ohio, so enjoy the outdoors while you can. Some
of our favorite freebie activities this summer are:
3. Pick up a book.
- Bookstores all over the globe have summer reading suggestion lists because
this relaxing season is a great time to lie out and read a good book. Whether
you need to catch up on classics by Orwell or Vonnegut, or check up with
Harry Potter and the rest of the crew at Hogwarts there are limitless titles
ready for your education and enjoyment.
- Take a look at some of our library
resources.
- You can even download e-books from the library Learn
more here.
4. Learn a new game or hobby.
Hobbies
go beyond baseball cards and comic books, although both of those can be quite
enjoyable. From arts courses
to hang-gliding there are plenty of options right at your fingertips. Here
are a few suggestions.
- Letterboxing and Geocaching: Geocaching is a
type of treasure hunt using a global navigation system to find small
objects or “caches” placed
anywhere in the world.
- Look to the stars. You don’t need a telescope
just your eyeballs. There are many observatories around Ohio with public
star viewings. http://stardate.org/ or http://space.com/
- Radio Controlled airplanes are a great way to
be outside, and have fun with technology. Check out this Feature
Story we
created about the Columbus’ Aero
RC Club.
